There's live bands a plenty in the form of Olympic Ayres (EP Launch), Lovers Jump Creek (EP Launch) and P a n a m a, as well as DJ sets by Alison Wonderland, Shantan Wantan Ichiban, Guusengarth, Myself (Kristy Lee) and all the way from QLD... Surecut Kids - which also means I get to meet them finally!! Woop woop!

Perth FRINGE WORLD FEST

EMERALD CITY SPIN is really proving to be an ongoing success! I was recently contacted and asked if it could be screened at the Perth FRINGE WORLD FEST - to which I of course said 'hell yeah'. It was shown at an event called Parts For Polo in which bike minded folk could come and browse, haggle and sell their bike gear, and then afterwards a whole bunch of bike films were shown (and one of those was ours!).

The event was free, however people were encouraged to donate gold coins to go towards the Bike Polo Nationals. From what I hear the event was so much of a success there was even a follow up encore screening the day after!

12th Planet, Jack Beats, Devlin & Ghostdad at Homebase

Monday the 9th of January saw the first day back for the weekly Heaps Decent Homebase at Redfern Community Centre in 2012. Starting off the year with more than a bang, we had not 1, not 2, but 5 international artists join us as guest facilitators. All the way from the USA were 12th Planet, Devlin & Ghostdad, and then hailing from the UK were 2 piece Jack Beats, all of whom happened to be in town for Fuzzy’s Field Day festival in The Domain on New Years Day. We were very appreciative that they took time out from their busy touring schedules to come down and spend a day in the studio and it was fantastic having them there!
Ghostdad immediately felt at home setting up camp as engineer in the main studio with Devlin. The two worked on a beat for Kut who then laid down a nice little rap over a trademark Devlin/Ghostdad beat.

Outside the studio, 12th Planet and Jack Beats pretty much became a beat making sweatshop, first busting out a killer beat for Tyrone, and then next Fowl Murk and Tama and then lastly one that featured Monica on the guitar!
With a pretty amazing beat in hand, Tyrone enlisted Levins the lyricist to help him start with a catchy hook talking about the summertime. Tyrone then sat down with me to record the hook, where we continued to build up the rest of the structure and even played around with singing some harmonies and adding other vocal layers. We played Jack Beats and 12th planet what we had come up with and they loved it, with 12th planet suggesting we record some add lib’s towards the end of the track – which we promptly proceeded to do!
Meanwhile on the other side of the room, Hugh worked on sampling some old school songs and recording guitar and vocals with Tashx, while Fowl Murk and Tama wowed our guests with their ability to write so quickly as the Terrible Twinz, and Henry showed everyone exactly how to record a verse in one take back inside the studio.

On top of all that Homebase headmaster Bozzetto found some brand new recruits from the Redfern Community Centre and gave them the opportunity to record and make music for their first time.
By the end of the session the music that was created was super impressive and everyone there is showing such amazing skill. Something else I really noticed that was great to see, was the general team player vibe and everyone’s ability to take direction and listen to the facilitators/guests. It makes such a difference when an artist can take on advice and try out different things in order to come up with the best results. Such a good atmosphere all in all.

Zensation is run by (my gorgeous lady friend) Christina, stocking and serving the finest teas from around the globe located on Bourke Street Surry Hills (right near Cleveland St) . They serve traditional tea service and Yum Cha and also stock many authentic and artisan tea wares.

Why did I not think of this for Christmas present ideas!?

So, if you're looking for something different to do throughout this crappy rainy weather - or on a lovely sunny day as well - why not pop by and visit Christina for some tea and dumplings?!

I am lucky enough to be playing after Nigerian-French artists Asa and Féfé at the Keystone Festval Bar this evening as part of Sydney Festival. If it's true what they say then I am in for a real treat... Asa has drawn comparisons to Erykah Badu with her smoke and honey voice and nod to 60s soul and Afro-beats and Fefe presents an explosive live show fusing elements of funk, soul, blues, rock and the odd ballad.

It's sold out (yew!) but luckily free from 11:30pm so anyone can join the party a little later on.

People can put down Christmas for loads of reasons and sure, I can often see their points to be valid.

However the one thing I LOVE about Christmas, is that it encourages people to be nicer to one another. So I took the opportunity and decided to push a few people out of their comfort zones and organise a Christmas Carol group to go to a nursing home and sing to some elderly folk.

I was joined by my Dad (on guitar), my step-mum Snez, Dan (on percussion), Garth, Leon, Christian, D-Train, Jason, Jessie, Nes, (FALCONA crew) my brother Andy and Thom (taking pictures) to form what turned out to be a very in-tune choir.

The people at the nursing home were sooo over the moon that they had visitors, let alone ones singing and bringing some cheer to their homes. Big thanks to everyone who came along and shook off their 'cool' to try something different and fun.

Apparently, (or so said a lady on the way out) we are all going to heaven now.

$1,000 donation to The Wayside Chapel!!

With the help of the lovely Hollie Martin (as my trusted photographer) I spent the morning visiting my charity of choice, The Wayside Chapel, so I could donate the $1,000 prize money from the Vodafone HTC Summer Beats Competition.

Wayside's Marketing and Communications manager Laura Watts took us both for a tour around the building where we asked 1001 questions about all the different programs Wayside offers the local community - they do some great things! We got to meet (and have some photos) with some of the volunteers, and then we were lucky enough to be taken up to the rooftop garden where some beautiful mosaics were in the process of being created as part of an arts program.

The whole building is brand new, and the one next door is currently being renovated so I hope to stay in touch with Laura and get to go along to the grand opening next March!

Big thanks to Vodafone, HTC and The Projects for putting on the Summer Beats comp and providing the opportunity for me to donate to an organisation that does such fantastic work.

Heaps Decent in Hurstville

Hurstville by Heaps Decent

In the October school holidays Rowan and I spent 3 afternoons in Hurstville running some music and DJ workshops – and boy were we glad we did! The workshops were put on with the help of Hurstville council and were open for anyone to walk by and join in. The first day we took along some decks and gave a demonstration on how to DJ, which resulted in a dance off/battle and myself MCing on the microphone (much to Rowan’s amusement). We soon realised though that there were some super talented young people hidden away in Hurstville, and so the following 2 days were spent creating in what has turned out to be 2 fantastic songs. In fact, the organisers of the workshops were so impressed they even asked if the guys involved in these 2 songs would perform at a Hurstville Council event – which they did – and killed it!
The stand outs featured on these two tracks are now making the trip to Homebase in Redfern weekly on Mondays, and have since been creating some fantastic music in the studio with other Heaps Decent facilitators. I cannot wait to see how they all progress over the next few months.

Hot summer nights, boozy afternoon picnics, christmas party invites flowing through thick and fast and week-long hangovers. Yes indeed, The silly season is nearly upon us and we are welcoming it with open arms by throwing one well concocted and rather large launch party - Oxford Art Factory, all three rooms, all night long.

A Molotov cocktail, expertly mixed with some of this summer’s best bands; Worlds End Press, Richard In Your Mind and Mitzi (to name a few), popcorn, cheap drinks and the cocktail umbrella on top - the one and only Smokin Joe Mekhael playing a mind-blowing 8 hour set in the Cube of Crazy. Incredible.

Not the easiest band name to roll off the tongue but one thats certainly got the tongues wagging, World’s End Press. Smashing it out of the park at this years Splendour In The Grass, this Melbourne band are bringing their disco pop jams and high paced, bounce off the walls live show up the coastline to showcase songs from their incredible debut album.

In an age where a wah pedal and a couple of beards are enough to get a band labelled 'psychedelic', it's great to see a band doing it properly. Sydney's Richard In Your Mind are this such outfit. Full of inventiveness and spark, they make beguiling, genuinely odd, mind-bending music, the kind as likely to veer off into a megaphone solo as it is an extended sitar workout.

Hailing from Australia’s most laidback and sunny city; Brisbane, comes 4 piece Mitzi. They make music and its good- Really good. Entwined by a backdrop of moving disco beats, syncopated guitar and capturing bass grooves lies the Mitzi sound- smooth, laidback vocals and a vintage analog warmth.

Juvenile Justice: Riverina Boys by Heaps Decent

Check out the fantastic new Heaps Decent EP with tracks created by the boys from Riverina Juvenile Justice Centre in Wagga Wagga and produced by Heaps Decent facilitator Adam Bozzetto with special guests Joyride and Wax Motif. I did some guest vocals on track 4. Losing My Mind as well!

This EP was part of a project partially funded by the Music Board of the Australia Council for The Arts. The project sees Heaps Decent facilitators carry out music production workshops in schools within Juvenile Justice Centres in Lidcombe and Wagga Wagga. This program seeks to provide the young people within these centres with a voice, motivation and heightened self-esteem by engaging with their experiences through music.
The Juvenile Justice program focuses on songwriting, recording and music production. There has been a marked increases in the young people’s engagement and confidence over the course of the project. Through our relationship with Fuzzy as well as other industry professionals we are able to bring high calibre artists both Australian and international to these workshops and have found that this is inspirational and exciting for both the young people as well as the musicians with a number of them returning for multiple workshops as well as spreading the word about Heaps Decent to their colleagues.

Largely due to my very passionately voting friends - I actually won the Vodafone HTC Summer Beats competition. I won $1,000 to donate to the charity of my choice - I chose The Wayside Chapel.

I really enjoyed everyone's set - some stand outs for me were Andy Benke (who I think given another 5 minutes voting time would have been in the lead for sure!) Mike Who and of course the cutest (and nicest) lady to ever grace the decks, Starjumps!

It's Melbourne cup time again!

As an ex-Melbournian and one who for a short while lived right up the road from the races, I definitely understand the whole vibe about the big race day. The memories are so sweet - all the women walking home, high heels in one hand, Maccas in the other.

This year Sydney seems to be getting pretty excited as well for the main race day.

I'll be playing at The Argyle from 4-7pm first, then later heading to Ivy 11-1am.
