Miss Fiona Macdonald is one hot babe in a lab coat!

You know in Hollywood movies how there is always some sexy-librian-ish smart girl - who is also super nice - that all the boys swoon after?

Well, I know that girl!

She travels to Syria to rub shoulders with Science's elite and wins major awards - all while looking effortlessly cute and stylish.
Read on to get a major girl crush...

WHAT DO YOU DO?
I'm the assistant editor of Cosmos - an Australian popular science magazine (www.cosmosmagazine.com). My role is a mixture of sub-editing, picture researching and writing – basically I am either looking at awesome science pictures, interviewing scientists or contemplating comma placement. I recently won the Publishers Australia New Journalist of the Year award at the Magazine Excellence awards, which was definitely a career highlight.

HOW DID YOU FIRST GET INTO JOURNALISM?
I wasn't sure what I wanted to do when I was at high school - I really loved writing and communicating with people, but I also liked languages and biology. I eventually did an arts and science degree to keep my options open but then moved over to straight science to pursue a career in zoology (I'm a little bit of an animal nut). Eventually I realised that the assignments I did the best in were the ones that involved writing, and after spending a very tedious (but fascinating) honours year working in a lab, I decided to do a Graduate Diploma of journalism.

I realised I could combine my love of nature and science with my passion for writing and started volunteering for a science news service called ScienceAlert. After about nine months of working for free I was promoted to chief sub-editor and also started writing a lot more for the site. Through my contacts there I started freelancing for other science publications, such as Popular Science magazine and ABC Science Online. After that I wrote for everyone and everything and eventually landed the job at Cosmos and moved up to Sydney from Melbourne. Journalism is a very competitive field, but at the end of the day, if you love it, you just have to get out there and do it. You don't want to have any regrets or 'what ifs'.

WHAT'S THE FUNNIEST OR STRANGEST THING YOU HAVE HAD TO DO FOR YOUR JOB?
I went to Syria in September to write a story on sustainable agriculture, which was a very strange experience in itself, and I spent this one day travelling around the tiniest villages and meeting farmers. I started the day inside one of the country's largest sheep markets, which woman aren't usually allowed to visit, and then ended the evening drinking Arak and speaking french with a gun-wielding farmer who I've since become pen pals with. I think that was the strangest (and best) thing I've had to do for work! But we're always in interesting situations in this job - there's never a dull moment!

IF YOU COULD INTERVIEW OR WRITE ABOUT ONE PERSON DEAD OR ALIVE WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY?
There are too many amazing people that I'd love to talk to and write about. I'd love to interview Marie Curie, because she was a big inspiration for me when studying science. I've always had an obsession with Joan of Arc and find her story so fascinating – I'd love to talk to her and find out the truth behind all of the legends. I'd also love to interview Jane Goodall - she's the most amazing woman that I've ever seen speak and someone who has had such an inspiring life. Most of all I'd like to interview my half sister who I've never met - my dad had her before he met my mum and I'd love to get to know her.

September in Syria

YOU'VE BEEN HANDED $1000 CASH, WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
I'd like to say that I'd put it all into a high interest savings account, but in reality I'd probably spend most of it on candles, champagne, cheese and clothes and save the rest for a holiday.

IF THE WORLD ONLY HAD ENOUGH SPACE FOR 1 MINOUGUE, WOULD YOU PICK KYLIE OR DANNI?
I think Kylie has definitely done a lot more for society - I rocked out to "I should be so lucky" a lot when I was young.

IF YOU HAD TO PUT ON YOUR IPOD RIGHT NOW - WHAT WOULD YOU PLAY?
Cheesy 1950s Christmas carols (I'm very excited about Christmas) or Rihanna's "What's my name" because I've had it stuck in my head for two days. I'm also pretty obsessed with Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes and Drake at the moment.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE NAIL POLISH COLOUR?
No matter how many colours I buy, I always go back to a classic red.

SUMMER 2011, DESCRIBE YOUR ULTIMATE WAY TO SPEND THE DAY?
I'm so excited about Summer 2011, it's going to be amazing. The perfect day would simply involve good friends, my family, good food, good wine, no stress and sunshine.

But to be more specific it might go a little something like this: a big breakfast and the paper with my boyfriend in Woollahra, a meander around Centennial Park so I can watch the horses. Then a stroll down to Bondi to get a coconut and visit the beach for a swim and a good hour of reading on the sand. As the sun goes down we'd meet up with friends and family on the grass for an amazing picnic spread with lots of champagne and then all head back to my boyfriend's for gin and tonics and to watch a film at his backyard cinema (it's amazing, get on it everyone: twitter.com/bbbsclub). The night would finish up with some drunken dancing somewhere - preferably to Kristy's DJing or house party iPod tunes. Finally I'd end up in bed with my cat Ron hogging half of my pillow.

WHAT ARE YOU DRINKING RIGHT NOW?
Crappy instant coffee in the office.

WHATS FOR DINNER?
A vegetarian stirfry with tempeh and brown rice - I need a vegetable hit after a big weekend.

Marie Curie

THE SIMPLE 7

WHAT SPICE GIRL WOULD YOU BE?
Baby - I was a HUGE Spice Girls fan and Baby was always my favourite. Two of the things I value most in a person are the ability to be young at heart and polite - she was always both. Being cool is way too overrated.

WATER… STILL OR SPARKLING?
Sparkling, it's the only thing I want to drink after a night out. I'm a bit obsessed.

BLACK OR WHITE?
White everything.

STRAWBERRY OR CHOCOLATE?
Chocolate - all chocolate. Although a strawberry dipped in chocolate is even better.

HOT OR COLD?
Always hot when it comes to weather. I think I'm cold blooded - you will NEVER hear me complain about being too hot. Even in the middle of the Syrian desert I would have said no to air conditioning. But you can't beat a cold drink or ice cream in Summer.

BRITNEY OR GAGA?
I don't have any strong feelings about either, but I did love Britney's first CD back in high school so I'll have to go with her.

SUMMER OR WINTER?
Summer, definitely Summer. One day I hope to have a lifestyle where I can follow the Summer around the globe writing about animals and science.

Sportsgirl Pitt Street WEEK!

I've had a crazy week with of gigs and work on - but most of my time was spent within these colourful walls at the new Sportsgirl Pitt street store. I loved being able to play loads of girl anthems and fun summer tunes - but I also really enjoyed getting to know some of the staff.
STAY TUNED FOR A VIDEO ON MY SPORTSGIRL PITT STREET STORE WEEK SOON>>>

I have to say that all the girls working there were awesome and it was such a pleasure to be playing music for them all week. They were each so genuinely nice, and the young-cute-style radar was constantly going of the radar with some of them!

My home all week was behind this little console... quite cosy!

The crowd out the front waiting for the doors to open!

BFF opening

This was a week back but I totally missed posting them up! Some pictures of the BFF opening party!

Spring clean machine

I've been wanting to clean up the little baclony area at my house for a while but all this rain kept making it wet and all the leaves mushy. But last weekend, the sunny days gave me the opprtunity to finally get my gloves on and garden!

I have to say that I'm growing rather close to my little plants; re-potting and trimming them all back seems to be a real bonding experience. Now I just need the sun to keep shining, and the idiots on the streets to stop throwing their dirty cigarette butts over the fence into my poor plants! A-holes!

All you smokers out there - who cares if you choose to smoke, just don't go dragging the environment down into a similar state your lungs will be in. Let the people/plants/animals/world breathe.

Some riders just miss the spot

So far this year, this takes the deep fried award as far as our band riders go!

Disco friday

I had been having a massive clean up of my music while sitting in bed feeling sick :( when I suddenly discovered all these old disco tracks on an old hardrive. I have seriously been lacking with my disco intake of late, and I have now come to the conclusion that in times like these when you need a cheer up, some chorus vocals, chimes and big synths can help to put a smile on your dial.

EIRLIE...

Currently I work freelance in the fashion industry as a consultant in design and production, as we'll as pattern making. I am also a producer of the Sydney BFF - Bicycle Film festival - which mostly involves trying the think up and plan fun ways to get as many people as possible involved in and in love with cycling :) I have a few other new projects in the works, which will push me in new directions and I'm a bit excited about them!

How long have you been involved in BFF?
Last year I was asked to be an artist and contribute a custom pair of sneakers for the BFF art exhibition. Then since mid this year (2010) I've been involved with all aspects, from planning mad parties, rallying up sponsorship to writing council proposals.

What design experience have you had? And how did you get started?
I studied fashion design, production and marketing after high school. I did a couple of great internships (in particular Josh Goot). Then after working in Melb for a year or so I made the move tosydney to work for the very lovely Ben Pollitt at Friedrich Gray

Do you have a pet name for your bike? If not, name it now!!??
Haha, its not very exciting but it's fondly refereed to as "The Clamont", which is the name of Clarence Street Cyclery's in house brand. It was built by frame builder Geoff Scott and raced on the track in the 90's.

Your ultimate dream fashion designer to work with?
Ooh um, Karl Lagerfeld. I would love the tiniest chance to experience how he works. I am so intrigued and in awe of how he has stayed on top of the game for so many years. Being amongst all the great designers/artists from the 50's to this day - imagine all the knowledge and stories he would have!!!

What is your favourite nail polish colour?
There is this one lovely warm yellow colour that I chose for my first manicure. I think the fact that I chose it during a treat session with one of my best friends after I broke my arm, which was then followed by a wonderful meal made by another great friend sets the colour in my mind as something special.
If you had to put on your iPod right now, what song would you play?

ooh I always find it so tricky to choose! I'm always listening to music when I ride, so lately when I've been wanting to get somewhere fast I'll put on Danzig 'Mother' or Face to Face. Sunny cruising days call for "Bleed For You" by Suspect or "Fly With Me" by Colorsounds, which I discovered on an old Colette remix (supercool retail space in Paris). And nothing beats a bit of Naughty by Nature for getting your attitude on!

What are you drinking right now?
Water, it's 1:15am, post opening night of the BFF, just at the rocks finally eating dinner.

What's for dinner?
Pancakes with whipped butter and scrambled eggs.

What ladies inspire you right now?
My girlfriends! I am so so lucky to be friends with some of the most passionate, strong and hilarious girls in Sydney. I love and respect that they are so unique, making as much out of life as possible, seizing every opportunity to better themselves and learn new things. Their advice is invaluable… hopefully some of their influence rubs off on me :) I really can't wait to see what the future brings for these ladies, I know they are going to do wonderful things.

Summer 2011, describe your ultimate day from start to finish?
Waking up early to a perfectly sunny day. Breakfast at Bunker accompanied by the latest issue ofApartmento, then finding a grassy place to sit in the sun and sketch. This would be followed by a ride to the most friendly and chilled cafe, Remy and Lee's in Surry Hills for a coffee (which is always made to perfection) and fruit toast with ricotta and cinnamon (seriously the biggest pieces of fruit ever made into fruit toast, yum). I'd then round up some bike lads and ladies, hit the bottle shop, stock up on cider and ride to the most perfect hidden beach in the east for an afternoon of sun and beautiful clear water. We'd jump on the ferry back to the city which would be followed by the most AMAZING Vietnamese vegan vermicelli noodle dish in the world on in Newtown. A moonlight cinema would appear and we would watch a wonderful documentary on a previously unknown /artist/designer/creative type. Then the evening would be wrapped up with back street mashing to dance my socks off at Good God!!

LOCAL LADY LOVE

It suddenly dawned on me that I am continuously coming across young amazing women doing rad things. Being the inquisitive girl that I am, I always ask them 101 questions about what they do etc, and I got to thinking - why not share their answers with everyone else?! So over summer, I am going to interview one lovely lady per week to post up here. I'll be asking loads of random questions - and then will finish with 7 simple questions I think can sum up where you're at with life (he he he). At the end of summer I'll compile the SIMPLE 7 answers to see what the general consensus is! Here are what would be my answers to THE SIMPLE 7:

What spice girl would you be?

I love them all! If I had to choose, Geri.

Water... Still or sparkling?

Sparking, with some fresh Lime.

Black or white?

Used to be black, now I'll take white.

Strawberry or chocolate?

Chocolate covered strawberries. Best of both worlds.

Hot or cold?

Hot Hot Hot

Britney or Gaga?!

Britney. I just don't quite get it, so it strangely fascinates me...

Summer or winter?!

Summer through and through.

SYDNEY LOVES SPORTSGIRL + LE SISTER

Computer crossover

I got a new laptop... yes I have finally crossed over to the other side and got myself a mac. I have to say, it is very very nice and definitely looks a lot prettier than my old pcs.
I now have the task of teaching myself logic (another music program) so I can be compatible with most other musos out there (as neuendo - the pc program I used to use isn't compatible with mac users). It shouldn't be too hard and i am dying to start using it and make some tunes - but I am so damn busy I haven't even had the time to sit down and make a start!
As well as that, I have been designing my new website!

It will have EVERYTHING about me up there. Music, pictures, bio, ALL gigs (session singing, original and djing) and anything else that takes my fancy. It'll be up within the next week, just in time for a heavy week where I will be playing some fun gigs at a new store opening - I won't say yet which one (although I have a massive soft spot for it)... more info to come soon!

Huffer Halloween

It was Halloween while I was in Auckland so I stopped in at the Huffer party and took some snaps. Some of the outfits were actually so well thought out and looked amazing. Here are just a few interesting ones...
